Why Nothing Is My Favourite Tech Company

Nothing is Here…

Pun intended… Nothing Technology Limited is a British consumer electronics company which is based in London. The company creates a variety of products, including the Nothing Phone 1, Nothing Phone 2, Nothing Ear 1 and Nothing Ear 2, which are often talked about in the Technology scene. Their objective is to make technology fun again through innovation and bringing unique features to technology, which other companies are lacking at the minute. The company came to be after a very successful round of funding, which got attention from various investors and company CEOs, leading to them being able to progress with some great products.

Once a OnePlus Fan

Before people say I’m biased, yes, I was once a OnePlus fan when the Nothing CEO Carl Pei worked there years ago. Back then, I liked the direction of OnePlus and in particular how they innovated and brought new things to the phone. My most memorable moment was getting my OnePlus 3T which was my first ever Android. The phone has amazing performance for the price and it offered very good features, including fast charging which at the time was amazing to me. The OnePlus 7 Pro also had that pop-up camera, an amazing way to make something like a camera stand out evermore – I’m just sad no one has made another phone like that since then! Of course, since then phones have innovated less, making them boring which is where Nothing steps into the picture.

Reasons to Love Nothing

There are an array of reasons to love a brand – their ecosystem, their products, the people that work there, the customer service and even the accessibility and availability of the products. Some of the reasons below are my personal opinions on why I think Nothing stands out from other smartphone and technology companies. Despite what I’m covering below, I would still encourage you to do your reading on Nothing and see some of their content from their YouTube channel (Nothing – YouTube).

Great Brand

Nothing has a great brand and a great CEO who consistently gets out there to talk about his company and brand. The way they create videos shows the dedication needed to run a technology company like Nothing. Their ability to gain exposure is fantastic and as a new competitor, it’s great to see them flourish and grow through the exposure they’re getting.

Sustainability

Many companies claim to be environmentally friendly and care about the environment but many can be quite wasteful too. What makes Nothing different is they use recycled materials and do not waste materials when producing their phones, 100% aluminium and 100% copper and 80% plastic are sustainable in the Nothing Phone 2 for example.

In a world where people buy phones very often, companies mustn’t burn through the planet’s resources too quickly otherwise, how will we continue creating great products? If you want to read Nothing’s report, I recommend doing so here Phone_2_Sustainability_Report_en.pdf (shopify.com).

More Products to Come

While the choice is currently limited, Nothing announced CMF.tech, another branch of Nothing focused on bringing value for money with their products. Already, they have sold CMF earphones, a CMF charger with multiple charging points offering up to 65 watts of charging and even a smartwatch, something which Nothing has not created yet. Given the product’s great features, such as the unique charging cable and glyph interface on the back of the phone, Nothing is creating a great ecosystem of good quality and good value products to meet the needs of the technology consumer.

Innovation

Hopefully, Nothing will continue to expand and provide even more products in different areas, not just focusing on smartphone products. I would love to see Smart technology, smart lighting and household products being made, which make the housing more interesting and exciting too.

Currently, some smart technology while useful, doesn’t provide much more in terms of uniqueness – take a smart Hoover (Roomba) for example, all it does is clean the floor and empty itself. What if the smart Hoover could talk to you if you’re in the way, play some music while it cleans up the house or even let you know when your phone is ringing? A silly example but why not innovate other products that are usually boring to use in day-to-day life?

Innovation can make things more exciting again, and Nothing continuously pushes the boundaries of some of their products. People could argue that they hardly innovate with the Nothing Phone 2 but sometimes things just work, so trying to change too much at once may break the charm of the already great product.

Affordability

With the point around CMF and Nothing having great products, comes good affordable prices and technology that provide value for money. The prices of Nothing products never come across as overly expensive for what the product is. Technology can be pricey, especially due to the components, supply chain demand and the materials used to create them but Nothing always seems to get the price right in terms of what you get.

British Company

This won’t be a positive for those who don’t live in the UK but Nothing is a London-based company so is a British company. Nothing was the first company to develop a smartphone for ages, which highlights a new and exciting time for British technology sector businesses. It’s also great for the UK since we don’t have a big presence in the smartphone market, while the US does with Apple and South Korea with Samsung.

Random Products

Very recently Nothing announced the Nothing Apparel clothing line and even created their very own 5.1% beer, which highlights their commitment to providing a range of interesting products, which other technology companies don’t sell too often or at all. This fits in with their innovation because it shows they’re willing to enter different markets with their brand.

Nothing vs Apple

Unfortunately, I don’t think Nothing will be better than the likes of the bigger technology companies i.e. Apple and Samsung at the moment but if they continue creating great products, their chances will surely increase. The issue is brands like Apple have such a big following and have a formula that works – the issue is they will stay with it because it works and makes money. On the other hand, nothing will stand out in innovation and making interesting products that get people talking. For me, this makes Nothing a great future brand for the technology and smartphone market.

Is Nothing Worth The Switch?

Given the reasons why Nothing is a great brand, it’s a great company to switch to if you want something unique, such as the Nothing Phone 2. It won’t have as great features as some of the best phones on the market but the Nothing Phone 2 is an all-rounder great phone to have. While I still have the Nothing Phone 1 and don’t plan to upgrade, I’m excited to see what the Nothing Phone 3 and Nothing Technology will bring in the future for me to potentially purchase for myself.
