Christmas Time at Wollaton Hall
Wollaton Hall, Nottingham hosts an annual Christmas Lights event that allows visitors to see a spectacular display of Christmas-themed lights. I recently went there on a date to enjoy and see what this event had to offer – here is my experience of attending the event from both a visitor and accessibility perspective.
Booking The Event
Accessible tickets could be ordered online and were quick to book. I had the option to select a ticket that came with a free assistant ticket (a free ticket for a cheaper date). Since bookings could be done online, I was quickly able to quickly book based on availability, however, they do have a box office at the place to buy tickets, so you’re not limited to booking online.
Parking
On arrival, parking was easy to get to since they had staff around to guide you on where to go. The car park was quite busy but the parking was quite close to the event which might be useful to preserve your chair battery (if you’ve been moving around all day already).
Variety of Lights and Features!
The event had a wide range of impressive lights and features to enjoy. I enjoyed seeing the variety of lights and features they had on display, it indeed made things feel Christmassy.
Some of the lights were also accompanied by Christmas-themed music, making it feel even more magical. Since there are a lot of lights to enjoy, there are plenty of opportunities to take pictures and appreciate the work done to create a festive feeling.
Range of Rest Points
Throughout the event, there were plenty of places to stop and have a drink or quick bite. Midway through we stopped for a sprite and mulled extremely refreshing wine!
There was also a stall where you could toast marshmallows and while we didn’t get any marshmallows to toast, everyone else seemed happy standing around the firepits!
In addition to the many refreshments and snack stalls, there are a bar, merry-go-round and Christmas present stalls, allowing you to relax after seeing many of the fantastic lights on offer.
Uneven Paths
Paths were often difficult to see due to the lack of lighting, this made it especially hard to navigate since some of the paths were uneven. While it is understandable that the trees and location are fairly old, lights would be a huge help when deciding the safest way to move.
Despite the uneven paths here and there, it doesn’t ruin the whole experience for you, although, I would recommend using a phone flashlight/lights to see the ground or stick to the centre of the path since it wasn’t too uneven there.
Lights Out
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Wollaton Hall and would recommend checking it out if you’re looking for something to do during the Christmas period. The event is running until the 6th of January 2022 but returns annually, so there is always the option to go in December 2022 as well.
